Selingan Island or also fondly known as Selingan Turtle Island, is a safe haven for the green and hawksbill turtles. Both turtle species are currently endangered but the island serves as place for them to safely lay their eggs.
Just 40 kilometres north of Sandakan’s coasts in the Sulu Sea, the island is a designated National Park and turtle conservation area, which you can visit and stay at to witness the amazing scene of turtle landings themselves!
Turtle landings happen throughout the year and the turtles normally go to shore after dusk to lay their eggs.
1st Day
Sandakan/Selingan Turtle Island
09:00am – Pickup time: from Sandakan Town Hotel Lobby/Airport.
10:00am – Depart from The Jetty With Speedboat, its take about 1 hour boat ride to Turtle Island.
– On arrival, go to Reception Counter for check-in and get room key.
– Free Leisure, roaming on the beach, sun bathing, swimming or snorkeling in the Sea can be done during
the day or after lunch.
12:30pm – Lunch will be served at the Cafeteria at. Free Leisure.
18:30pm – There is a Parks Exhibition Hall which opened daily.
19:00pm – Video Show
19:30pm – Dinner will be served at The Cafeteria.
– Standby at the cafeteria until the announcement from the parks ranger inform the sighting of mother turtle coming ashore to lay eggs.
– Follow the parks ranger to the nesting side and witness the egg laying process collecting of eggs and the tagging of the mother turtle.
– Next is to witness the planting of turtle eggs in the hatchery.
– If you are lucky, you may witness the baby turtle being released to the sea for the first time.
– Overnight on island.
MEAL PLAN : Lunch/Dinner
2nd Day
Selingan Turtle Island/Sandakan
06:30am – Breakfast at the cafeteria.
– Return your key to the reception counter and make sure you take nothing but photograph and leave nothing but foot prints.
07:00am – Depart from Turtle Island.
08:00am – Estimate time reach at the jetty, transfer back to Sandakan Town Hotel.
